These should be changed as often as every oil change or at a minimum of once a year. A visual inspection with every oil service will tell you how dirty the filter is. Tap the filter lightly on the ground and see how much gunk falls out - sand...dirt...bugs...etc. This will help open up a clogged filter to breath better and even let you know when to replace it.
